NPP Claims Economic Recovery Prior to Transition

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) asserts that it restored Ghana's economy to pre-COVID-19 levels before transitioning power. Dr. Gideon Boako, a spokesperson for the NPP, highlighted that in 2024, the nation achieved a real GDP growth rate of 5.7%, surpassing the initial target of 3.1%, which was later revised to 4%.

This growth marks the highest economic expansion since 2020 and is viewed by the NPP as a strong recovery from previous global economic challenges. The party also noted that Ghana's economy was projected to exceed GH¢1 trillion in 2024, a significant increase from GH¢219.5 billion in 2016.

President Nana Akufo-Addo echoed these sentiments in December 2024, stating that Ghana's economy had returned to pre-COVID-19 growth levels.

However, some opposition figures have contested these claims. Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, the current Minister of Finance, attributed the 5.7% growth rate in 2024 largely to activities in the mining and quarrying sector, particularly illegal small-scale mining, known locally as "galamsey."

As Ghana continues to navigate its economic trajectory, these differing perspectives highlight the complexities of assessing the nation's financial health and the factors contributing to its growth.
